A Saturday morning trip to the beach.

Soaking up the warm morning sun.

The three of us sitting on our mats, eating hotcakes and big breakfast with the wind blowing in our faces.

My husband and me lying beside each other looking up into the clear blue skies, feet intertwined, toes in the sand.

Building sandcastles and throwing our daughter into the water.

Having my husband and daughter plant sandy kisses on my cheek.

You Know Who You Are [Wednesday

Recently, it is with much joy that I have made a new friend. I noticed a couple of common traits that stand out among the people who intrigue me. Firstly, they're always older, hardly younger. Secondly, they are people who hold certain principles and morals close to their heart and vehemently proclaim them. Thirdly, they're close to their family. And lastly, they always have an interesting laughter.

On the one hand, I enjoy listening to her recounting her tales, and sharing her personal views with me. How she lives her life, how she spends her time, her family ties and bonds. Although some parts are kinda warped, but it impresses me that this person is so far in her life with such a lifestyle. Interestingly, I know Christians who are not as close to the command of God to obey our parents, the way she does. True, she still has her quirks and rude behaviour, but I can sense the moral value of respect in her. And in many ways, she upholds values and principles which we, as Christians, fail to.

This may sound weird, but you're probably the rare few in my life whom I allow so close to me and so deep in my personal affairs. Yet you're such a radical person and pretty far off from my ideals. Without knowing it, I've placed you above acquaintanceship (if there's ever such a word). Perhaps this is affinity. The few times we've gone out were moments where I needed company and someone's presence, and you've provided that readily without any hesitation. In case you don't realise, you have been there for me. I wish I knew how you treat your other friends. If it is in this same manner, then I will generalise this. If otherwise, I may have found an incredibly precious thing in you ~ a friend.

While I appear sociable and have many friends with few disliking me, there is nothing further from the truth. I can count my close buddies with 1 hand. There is great fear and vulnerability when you disclose heartfelt secrets with people. You are placing your trust and confidence in them to not use the information against you, and trust takes time to build, though it is easily lost. Thus, I hold my defences pretty high and am extremely selective with the people whom I decide to allow further into my life.

Thank you for all that you have done, whether knowingly or unknowingly.

Everytime I encounter an unconditioned stimulus (a nice sms), I experience an unconditioned response (a warm fuzzy feeling). Each time before I encounter the unconditioned stimulus however, I will first hear my message ringtone (neutral stimulus which becomes a conditioned stimulus).

Delayed Conditioning
Nice sms (US) -> Warm fuzzy feeling (UR)
Message ringtone (NS) + Nice sms (US) -> Warm fuzzy feeling (UR)
Message ringtone (CS) -> Slight warm fuzzy feeling (CR)

So now, whenever I hear the message ringtone, I will have this slight warm, fuzzy feeling.
I have been pavlovianed, I feel like a high-tech pavlovian dog.

This SMS made me smile...

"How is my wife & the footballer today?"

Yep, Preston has been very active...kicking & moving inside me. On some days, you can see my belly move up & down due to his antics.

It's amazing. Truly. We already feel so much love for Preston before we have seen and held him.

The next checkup is a week away. :)

Starbucks Enthusiastic Partner [Tuesday
Aug 19th, 2008 at 1:39pm ]

camy
I have been wanting to write!!! It's been forever!!!

Firstly, I have already crossed the line from a newbie to a regular partner at Starbucks! Woo hoo!!! Yes yes, I'm now the favourite partner. Hehe. Cuz apparently, I buy food! Bleah. Those greedy monsters.

There have been many changes in the store too. New partners are hired, training, last minute disappearances, shift manager movement, and even store manager changes. It's like a massive overhaul for the store in terms of human resources, if you ask me. And the partner appraisal was just held so it was quite interesting as I rated myself and charted my growth as a partner. Frankly, I am extremely pleased with my performance. I've always been driven by results and performance and my progress is clearly demarcated, no doubt about it.

To share a bit more on the store, I miss those people who have left. The reason for the sudden drop in the number of available partners is also due to school re-opening after the holidays. Majority of the partner age group hinges around the tertiary range, so the impact to the store was quite hefty and I felt a large brunt of it as I covered many empty slots. It was because of this that my skills improved by leaps and bounds, and also grew my passion to improve customer service in times of major resource deprivation. Somehow, the tougher the challenge, the more eager I find myself in terms of delivering. Psychotic, maybe, but, very wildly fun! Haha.

I hold pretty mixed feelings to the new partners who have joined. My personal take is to never scream down at anyone, whether they're new, amateurs, experienced, or veterans. Who doesn't make mistakes? All humans do! So treat each one with the due respect you would want others to give you. Thus, my demeanour to all is one of fun and to never be afraid to ask, and I think I'm quite good at that in, creating a positive environment where people are not afraid to make mistakes, and learn from them.

During supper with my store manager, I shared with her how I felt so stressed and pressured during my first month with the store cuz of the expectation they placed on me. Even she noticed that the new partner was shaking whenever he holds the pitcher to steam the milk. I know how he feels cuz I went through that. I think it was Sarah who commented that my hand was shaking when I was at the bar making drinks. How would you feel if someone shouted at you and said things like, "Aiya, you ah." I mean, the person already feels lousy for not being able to perform up to standards, but why do you wanna add on to it and make the person feel worse? That Sat, I was so fedup that by noon, my face was black as thunder when I took customers' orders at the POS. It really sucks. But hey, what a big difference it would have made if they had encouraged and said, "Ok. Don't worry about it. Just remember next time ok." And say it with a smile and sincerity.

How can you expect a 1-month old partner to behave and act as efficiently and fast as a 2-year old partner? It's just not realistic and only serves as a deterrent to the new partner's learning curve. We all learn faster when the environment is positive and our minds are open to taking in valuable feedback and criticism with the motive of improvement. Sometimes I feel like retorting, "Ok. So I forgot his coffee. Instead of harping on how I missed the mark, what do you suggest I can improve on the next time?" Instead of dwelling on what has already happened, why don't you comment on what should have been done right? How does, "You always forget the coffee!" help in any way?

Yeah well, the good thing is, my store manager has an extremely radical approach to resolve such matters. To her, the worse you are something, the more practise she will make you go through in order to hone your skills. That is the right way to improve overall store performance. All along, whenever I am unable to cope with the overflowing orders, they will typically send me out to clear tables or other roles and take over the bar. When I told her that's what usually happens to me, she shared her totally opposite view, which I fully agreed with. The store is gonna go through a massive makeover in the culture, attitude, and process. I for one, am looking forward to it with much delight.

So now, I am capable enough to handle the entire floor on my own, in exclusion of the internal store per se. I was able to flow smoothly along the food, POS, bar, and frap. Even I was amazed and impressed with myself. Hehe. And guess what, I even received an offer to work at another cafe. Keke. Brazenly attempting to poach me across the counter! Hee. My energy and enthusiasm is at such a climax now that I constantly smile and holler greetings to customers. I think my next POS greeting is to invite them to step up and purchase a drink, and then con them to include syrups and upsize their drinks to earn the additional few cents of revenue each transaction. The store's success is my success cuz without the store, I wouldn't have a Starbucks to work at. To more great shifts at the store. I am looking forward to Dec where the school holidays are up again and the HP 1 week shutdown. Think I shall be at the store in full force! Whoopee!

The much-anticipated National Day Rally speech was finally telecasted.

I stayed glued to the TV screen...eagerly waiting to know what measures & goodies the Govt has planned.

The goodies are great. Not exceptional...but a good start. :)

Excerpts from PM Lee's speech (emphasis added) --

"Paid maternity leave will be extended from 12 weeks to 16 weeks, and the extra four weeks can be taken anytime during the baby's first year. It was previously extended from eight to 12 weeks in 2004.

There will also be a larger baby bonus for first-time parents, more tax incentives to encourage mothers to work, more incentives for the fifth and subsequent children, and more financial support for couples who go for In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment."

"Childcare leave, which can be claimed by either parent, will be extended from two to six days per year.

There will also be one week of unpaid infant-care leave per year, and mums or dads can claim it until their child turns two years old."

And to help with inflation...

"The second instalment of growth dividends, due on October 1, will increase by 50 per cent."

We went horse riding last Saturday! It was really fun and we decided that we will continue with the lessons till we are proficient riders. It is really affordable to learn how to ride here in Australia. It only cost $30 per 1.5hours of lesson. However I would highly recommend anyone who is interested to get your own helmets!

I wore the riding school's helmet and I got a rash on my forehead lah! So dirty... somemore my friend scares me by telling me that many school kids get head lice and there are many kids in this riding school! Eeek! So I ordered my black velvet helmet from ebay and hopefully I can get them before my next class. Then I can pretend pretend that I am one of those Olympians riders... very feeling!

Lucky, the unlucky horse who has to bear my weight. He is kinda stubborn and kept tugging the strap forward. Dont think I will ride him again next week.

We finally get to molest some animals this semester. It has been really theoretical for the past one year so this animal handling subject is really a refreshing change. My first prac was on pigs and sad to say this, I very much preferred them chopped up, marinated and cooked than running-around-screaming-till-your-ears-gone-deaf-and-shit-everywhere-on-your-body-alive. The white pinkish ones were very vocal and resistant when caught while the colored ones were tamer but apparently not as delicious.

I managed to ask the pig expert/tutor why Australian pork had an aftertaste (basically it leaves a bad taste in your mouth) compared to the pork I am used to in Singapore when both came from the same country and the reason was that Singapore only purchases the best female pigs and the shittier males were for local consumption. Apparently, China has the most diverse species of pigs in the world and many pig experts are heading to China to get better quality pigs to breed. In addition, Aussie porkies taste very different to European pigs due to the different type of feed they eat.

According to another cow tutor, who was helping out, Australian beef is very tasteless and bland compared to American beef because American cows are corn-fed compared to Aussie cows who just graze on grass all day long.

So my theory is that cannibals would probably prefer to eat certain race/culture of people because we eat very different kind of food too.

Crapping machines on the prowl. One touch and your hands smell for days. Everytime I put food in my mouth using my hands, I can smell them.

My tutor spray-painted the pig to illustrate where the locations of most organs are in a pig so we could visualize it.

After 2 weeks of detox diet, my weight has stagnated at 77kg. Looks like dieting alone will not help me reach my target weight of 75kg. Bear in mind that I still pig out on the weekends because Tim could not resist the temptation of Mcdonalds (I blame him for luring me into the evil clutches of Quarter pounders) + dinner parties to attend (too many birthdays to go to because their parents could not resist hanky-pankying with each other during Xmas that resulted in them being born 9 months later in Aug). So keeping the 4kg I lost from coming back into my body is not too bad a result.

I started adding in some cardio work outs and hopefully I will see more results by the end of this Friday. Since my goal of cutting down on fuel usage via cycling has failed miserably (I blame the cold mornings!), I resorted to skipping like a little schoolgirl for five minutes 3 times a week. I aim to increase an additional minute every week till I reach 15mins of skippings.

The historic SIN-CHN match is on RIGHT NOW.

I can't watch.

It's TOO nerve-wrecking to stay glued in front of the telly.

I'll just wait for the results...but Go Gals Go!!!

At this moment, i'm already feeling so proud of them. :) An Olympic medal whether in glittery gold or shimmery silver is definitely celebratory!
